# Upload documents

> Add documents to your bot with drag and drop, and learn what happens when you upload the same document again.

Your bot answers from your documents and from websites that you import. Upload documents in the dashboard, and the bot can answer questions about them when processing finishes.

## What you can upload

PDF, DOCX, XLSX, HTML, CSV, TXT and Markdown, up to 25 MB per file.

> **Spreadsheets and big documents**
>
> Spreadsheets and Office documents have these limits:
>
> * 50,000 rows for each sheet or CSV
> * 1,000,000 cells
> * 8,000,000 characters of text
> * 64 MB when unzipped
>
> A document over the size limit shows this message:
>
> > Files can be at most 25 MB; split it and upload the parts.

> **Scanned PDFs**
>
> Paperlink AI has no OCR today. A scanned, password-protected or corrupted PDF fails with this message:
>
> > We couldn't read this PDF. If it is scanned, password-protected or corrupted, export it again as a text-based PDF and re-upload it.
>
> Export the PDF again from the original program, and upload the new PDF.

> **Documents we refuse**
>
> Paperlink AI refuses documents with these names: MANIFEST, README, CHANGELOG and LICENSE. It also refuses dotfiles, which are names that start with a dot.
>
> The dashboard tells you to rename the document if it has customer-facing content. Paperlink AI also refuses empty documents.

> [!TIP]
>
> If your knowledge is on a public website, [import the website](https://paperlinkai.com/docs/guides/documents/website.md) instead of uploading each page.

## How to upload

**1. Open Documents**

Select **Documents** in the dashboard sidebar.

**2. Add your documents**

Drag documents onto the page. Or select **Upload files**. You can select more than one document.

**3. Watch the progress bar**

Each document shows a progress bar while it uploads.

**4. Cancel if you need to**

Select the X on the progress bar to cancel an upload.

> [!NOTE]
>
> If you leave the Documents page, the uploads in progress stop. Stay on the page until the progress bars finish.

## Upload the same document again

Paperlink AI uses the document name and the document content to decide what to do. There are three outcomes.

| You upload | Result |
| - | - |
| The same name with new content | A new version of that document. The dashboard shows "Uploaded a new version of X. Processing…" |
| The same name and the same content | No change. The dashboard shows "X is already uploaded and unchanged." |
| The same content with a new name | A new document. |

To learn how the bot treats old and new versions, read [Versions, effective dates and supersedes](https://paperlinkai.com/docs/guides/documents/versions.md).
