# Versions, effective dates and supersedes

> Keep your bot current when a document changes, and mark which document replaces an older one.

Documents change, and old text can mislead your visitors. Use new versions and the Supersedes link to tell the bot which document to trust.

## The simple way: upload again with the same name

Upload the new document with the same name as the old one. Paperlink AI treats it as a new version of that document.

The bot keeps answering from the old text until the new text is Ready.

## Edit metadata

Select the calendar icon on a document row to open the **Edit metadata** popover. It has two fields.

* **Effective date**: the date when the document starts to apply.
* **Supersedes**: another Ready document that this document replaces.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The bot follows three rules when two documents conflict:
>
> 1. Only an explicit Supersedes link makes one document outrank another. The outranked document moves down, but stays in use.
> 2. An effective date in the future outranks nothing yet.
> 3. The upload date never decides which document wins.

> [!WARNING]
>
> An effective date alone changes nothing. If you want the bot to prefer a document, set Supersedes on it.

## The possible versions banner

Sometimes two documents look like versions of the same document. The Documents page then shows an amber banner with this text:

> {A} and {B} look like versions of the same document. Mark the newer one so answers use it.

The banner has two actions.

* **Mark newer**: select this to mark the newer document.
* **it's the other way round**: select this when the banner has the order wrong.

The page shows at most 5 banners.
