Short answer
To convert a PDF to Markdown, extract the text with its position and font size, rebuild lines and paragraphs, and mark larger text as headings. This converter does that in your browser with pdf.js, removes repeated headers, footers and page numbers, and gives you a .md file.
How to convert a PDF to Markdown
- Drop the PDF on the box, or select it from your files. The converter reads each page in your browser and shows its progress.
- Check the result. The summary shows the number of pages, characters and headings found. Read the headings and any tables, because those are where a PDF hides the most structure.
- Copy or download. Download gives you a
.mdfile with the same name as the PDF.
How the converter reads a PDF
A PDF does not store paragraphs or headings. It stores pieces of text, each with a position and a font size. To get Markdown back, the converter rebuilds the structure in five steps:
- Lines. Text pieces on the same baseline become one line, in left-to-right order, with the spaces put back.
- Headers and footers. A line that opens or closes at least half the pages (ignoring numbers) is a running header or footer, and is removed. So are page numbers such as "12" or "Page 3 of 20".
- Headings. The font size used for most of the text is the body size. Short lines at least 15% larger become headings.
- Lists. Lines that start with a bullet or a number such as "1." or "a)" become Markdown list items.
- Paragraphs. Lines close together join into one paragraph. A word broken with a hyphen at the end of a line is joined back.
| Line size compared with the body text | Markdown |
|---|---|
| 1.6 times or more | # Heading 1 |
| 1.3 to 1.6 times | ## Heading 2 |
| 1.15 to 1.3 times | ### Heading 3 |
What the output looks like
A page from a returns policy comes out like this:
# Refund policy
## Returns
You can return an item within 30 days of delivery for a full refund.
- Keep the receipt or order number.
- Items must be unused. What it can and cannot do
- Text PDFs only. A scanned page is an image. Without OCR there is no text to read, and the converter tells you so.
- No tables. Cells come out as text in reading order. A PDF stores where each piece of text is, not which cells form a table.
- No images or links. They are left out.
- Columns. Two-column layouts can mix lines from both columns. Check those pages, or export the source document as a single column.
- Password-protected files are refused. Remove the password first.
Why Markdown for documents you give to AI
AI tools read text, not page layout. When a PDF goes into a chatbot or a search index, the tool has to guess where the headings and paragraphs are, and a wrong guess splits answers in the middle or merges two topics. Markdown keeps the structure in a few plain characters: # for a heading, - for a list item, a blank line between paragraphs.
That structure matters most for retrieval. Systems that answer from your documents split them into passages, and a passage that starts at a heading is easier to match with a question than one that starts mid-sentence. Converting to Markdown also lets you see what the AI will see, fix it, and remove pages that should not be answered from, such as old price lists.
If you use Paperlink AI, you do not need to convert first: upload the PDF and it extracts the text for you. The converter is useful when you want to review or edit the text, keep a Markdown copy in your docs, or prepare files for another tool. To publish a short, curated list of your most useful pages for AI tools, use the llms.txt generator.
Tips for a cleaner result
- Export from the source (Word, Google Docs) to PDF with real headings, not bold body text.
- Remove cover pages and tables of contents before you convert, or delete them from the Markdown after.
- For long manuals, convert each chapter as its own file so each one stays on one topic.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with pdf.js, the PDF library from Mozilla. The file is not sent to our servers, and closing the tab removes it.
Can it convert scanned PDFs?
No. A scanned PDF is a set of images with no text layer, and this tool reads text only. It tells you when most pages have no text. Run OCR first, then convert the result.
Does it keep tables and images?
Images are left out. Table cells come out as lines of text in reading order, not as Markdown tables, because a PDF stores positions, not table structure. Check tables by hand after you convert.
How does it decide what is a heading?
It finds the font size most of the text uses. Short lines set at least 15% larger become headings: much larger lines become #, then ## and ###. Lines that end with a period or comma stay as text.
Why convert PDFs to Markdown for AI tools?
Markdown keeps the structure (headings, lists) in plain text with very few extra characters. AI models and search tools read it more reliably than PDF layout, and it is easy to check and edit before you use it.
What is the size limit?
Up to 50 MB and 500 pages per file. Split larger files first. Very large PDFs can be slow on older phones because all the work happens on your device.
