Chatbot welcome messages
General welcome
Hi! I'm [bot name], [company]'s assistant. I can answer questions about [topics, such as orders, returns and your account] from our help pages. What can I help you with?
Welcome that sets expectations
Hello! I'm an automated assistant for [company]. I answer from our help center, and if I can't find the answer, I'll tell you and help you reach our team. What's your question?
Welcome on a pricing or product page
Questions about [plan or product]? I can explain features, plans and how to get started. Ask me anything, or [book a call with our team].
Short welcome for a small widget
Hi! Ask me anything about [company].
Fallback messages (when the bot does not know)
Not in the help pages
I couldn't find an answer to that in our help pages, and I don't want to guess. You can reach our team at [support email], or I can send this conversation to them so you don't have to repeat yourself. Would you like me to do that?
Did not understand the question
Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. Could you say it another way, or pick one of these? [Orders] [Billing] [Account] [Talk to a person]
Partly answered
Here is what I found about [topic]: [answer from the help page]. I couldn't find anything about [the part that is missing]. For that, our team can help: [contact link].
Question the bot should not answer
That's a question for a person on our team, not for me. Please contact [support email or contact page], and include [order number or account email] so they can help faster.
Handoff to a person
Handoff to live chat
I'll connect you with someone from our team now. They'll see this conversation, so you won't need to start over. While you wait, is there anything you'd like to add?
Send the conversation to support by email
I've sent this conversation to our support team. They'll reply to [the email address you gave / your account email]. If you want to add anything, reply to that email.
Ask for an email address before handing off
I can pass this to our team. What email address should they reply to? I'll include this conversation so you don't have to explain it again.
Handoff for an upset customer
I'm sorry this has been frustrating. A person should look at this. I've passed your conversation to our team, and they'll contact you at [email]. You can also reach them directly at [support email or phone].
After hours and closing messages
Outside support hours
Our team is offline right now. They work [days and hours, with time zone]. I can still answer questions from our help pages, or I can send your message to the team and they'll reply by email when they're back.
Closing after an answer
Glad that helped! Is there anything else I can help you with? If not, have a great day.
Closing with a feedback question
Did I answer your question? [Yes, thanks] [No, I need a person]
Chatbot name ideas
Friendly first names
Short, easy to type and easy to say: Ava, Max, Leo, Mia, Sam, Nova, Kai, Ivy, Theo, Zoe, Remy, Juno. Check that the name is not already used by a well-known assistant or by someone on your own team.
Names built from your brand
Patterns that tie the bot to your company: - [Brand] Assistant, [Brand] Helper, Ask [Brand] - A shortened brand name: [first syllable of brand] + "y" or "o" - Your mascot or logo animal: [mascot name] - A word from your product: a garden shop might use Sprout, Fern or Bloom; a bank might use Ledger or Penny
Clear, descriptive names
When you want customers to know at once that they are talking to a bot: Support Assistant, Help Bot, Order Helper, Booking Assistant, Docs Assistant, Answer Desk, Help Center Assistant. Descriptive names suit banks, health, legal and B2B sites, where a human-sounding name can feel like a trick.

Short answer
A chatbot script is the set of fixed messages a support chatbot uses around its answers: the welcome, quick reply buttons, a clarifying question, what it says when it does not know, the handoff to a person and the closing. The fallback matters most: the bot should say it does not know and offer a way to reach your team, never guess. Copy the templates below or generate a script for your business.
How to use the chatbot script generator
- Describe your business in a few words, such as "online shop for indoor plants" or "accounting software for freelancers".
- Pick a tone. Friendly, professional, playful or short. Playful scripts keep the fallback and handoff messages plain, because a joke in those moments reads badly.
- Add a bot name, or leave it empty to get six name ideas with a reason for each.
- Say how customers reach a person and what the bot helps with. Both are optional. Without a contact, the script writes [support email] where it is needed. It never invents opening hours, phone numbers or response times.
- Paste the messages into your chatbot settings and fill in the brackets.
Out of free runs for today? The templates above cover welcome, fallback, handoff, after hours and closing messages, name ideas and three full scripts.
The parts of a chatbot script
| Message | When it shows | What it must do |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome | When the chat opens | Say who the bot is and what it can help with |
| Quick replies | Under the welcome | Offer the most common topics as buttons |
| Clarifying question | When a question is too broad | Ask one question with clear options |
| Fallback | When the bot does not know | Say so plainly and offer a person |
| Handoff | When a person takes over | Say who replies, where, and that history is kept |
| After hours | Outside support hours | Say when the team is back and what the bot can still do |
| Closing | When the question is answered | Check if anything else is needed |
Write the fallback message first
Most chatbot scripts spend their effort on the welcome. The message that decides whether customers trust the bot is the fallback: what it says when it does not know. A bot that guesses gives wrong answers with confidence, and one wrong answer about a refund or a price can cost more trust than many good answers earn.
A good fallback message does three things:
- It says plainly that the bot could not find the answer.
- It does not guess or give a half answer dressed up as a full one.
- It offers a way to reach a person: a support email, a contact page, or sending the conversation to the team.
The fallback templates above follow these rules, including a version for questions the bot should never answer, such as account changes that need a person to check identity.
Chatbot welcome message tips
- Say it is an assistant. Customers who think they are talking to a person feel tricked when they find out.
- Say what it can help with. "I can answer questions about orders, returns and your account" tells customers what to ask.
- Keep it short. One or two sentences. The customer opened the chat to ask something.
- Match the page. On a pricing page, offer help with plans; on a help page, offer help with the product.
How to pick a chatbot name
A good chatbot name is short, easy to say and easy to type, and it fits your brand. There are three common approaches, each with a template above: a friendly first name, a name built from your brand or product, and a descriptive name such as "Support Assistant". Descriptive names suit banks, health, legal and B2B sites, where a human first name can feel like a trick. Whatever you choose, check that a well-known assistant or someone on your team does not already use it.
Handoff to a person
The handoff is where customers most often feel passed around. Say who will reply, where (live chat, or by email to the address they gave), and that the person will see the conversation, so the customer does not have to repeat it. Then make sure that is true: the agent who picks it up should get the full chat history.
Do not promise a reply time unless your team can keep it every day. "Our team will reply by email" is safe; "within 5 minutes" is a promise that breaks on a busy Monday.
Test the script before launch
Ask the bot the ten questions customers ask most, a few it should not know, and one that needs a person. Check that the fallback and handoff messages appear when they should. Then read real conversations for the first weeks, and ask for feedback with a short question after each answer; the chatbot feedback survey template shows how. Save replies for your human team in the canned responses library.
Frequently asked questions
What should a chatbot welcome message say?
Who the bot is, what it can help with, and how to ask. One or two sentences, plus a few quick reply buttons for the most common topics. Saying that it is an automated assistant sets the right expectations.
What should a chatbot say when it does not know the answer?
That it could not find the answer, plainly and without guessing, followed by a way to reach a person: a support email, a contact page or an offer to send the conversation to the team. A wrong answer said with confidence costs more trust than an honest "I don't know".
How do I choose a name for my chatbot?
Pick a name that is short, easy to type and fits your brand, and check that no well-known assistant or person on your team uses it. On banking, health, legal and B2B sites, a descriptive name such as "Support Assistant" often works better than a human first name.
Should a chatbot pretend to be a person?
No. Tell customers they are talking to an automated assistant, in the welcome message or next to the name. Customers who feel tricked lose trust in the answers, and the handoff to a real person feels smoother when nobody pretended.
Is the chatbot script generator free?
Yes. You get 5 free AI runs a day without an account, shared by all our AI tools. What you enter is sent to our AI model to write the script and is not stored. It never invents opening hours, contact details or response times; it leaves placeholders instead.
