Best AI chatbots that answer from your documentation (2026)

Updated

Short answer

Six tools meet our criteria: they answer customer questions from content you provide, read a public website or help center, hand a visitor to a person, and document all three on their own pages. They differ most in what they are built around: Intercom Fin, Zendesk AI agents and Tidio Lyro sit inside a help desk or live chat product, while Chatbase, SiteGPT and Paperlink AI are standalone chatbots. Paperlink AI is ours, and it is the narrowest of the six: answers only from your content, honest refusals and gap reports.

If your answers already live in a help center, a docs site or a stack of PDFs, you want a chatbot that answers from them, not from the open web. Many tools now say they do this. This page compares six that document how they do it on their own pages, so you can check every fact we state. We make one of them, Paperlink AI, and we say where the others fit better.

How we chose the tools

A tool is on this list only if its own public pages show all four of these:

  1. It answers customer questions from content the business provides.
  2. It can read a public website, help center or docs site, not only uploaded files.
  3. It can hand a visitor to a person when the bot cannot help.
  4. The vendor documents the first three in its product pages or docs, so the facts can be checked.

We did not test answer quality across products, and we do not rank them. The order below is alphabetical. Facts were checked against each vendor's pages on the date shown above, and we left out anything we could not find there. We list no prices: they change, and each vendor publishes its own.

What each tool is built for

Chatbase

Chatbase describes itself as a platform for AI agents for customer support. Beyond answers, its agents run actions: an escalation action opens a ticket in the help desk you choose, other actions hand the chat to live chat tools, and some call systems such as Stripe, Shopify or your own APIs. It also has its own help desk with manual takeover. It fits teams that want one agent to answer and act. See the Chatbase comparison.

Intercom Fin

Fin is Intercom's AI agent. It answers from the knowledge sources in Intercom's Knowledge Hub and works on channels including chat, email and voice. It runs in Intercom's help desk or alongside others such as Zendesk and Salesforce, and hands unresolved conversations to the team there. It fits support teams that run a help desk across channels. See the Intercom Fin comparison.

Paperlink AI (ours)

Paperlink AI is a customer support chatbot for business websites, and it does less than most tools here on purpose. It answers only from the documents you upload and the public pages it imports, checks imported sites again weekly or daily depending on the plan, and refuses when your content does not hold the answer. The refusal shows your support contact, and a visitor can send the conversation to your team. Your team sees the source page behind every answer and a report of the questions it could not answer. It has no live chat, no actions and no email or voice channel. Read the features.

SiteGPT

SiteGPT builds a website chatbot from your content and is the closest to Paperlink AI in approach. It reads more kinds of sources, including YouTube and connected apps, syncs websites on a schedule that depends on the plan, collects leads with forms, and escalates to your team when a visitor asks for a person or seems frustrated. See the SiteGPT comparison.

Tidio Lyro

Lyro is the AI agent in Tidio, which combines live chat, a help desk and a chatbot builder. With a store connected, agents see a shopper's cart and orders beside the chat, and Lyro can check order status. It fits online stores with people on live chat. See the Tidio comparison.

Zendesk AI agents

Zendesk AI agents are part of Zendesk. They work on messaging, email and voice, answer from Zendesk help centers and other connected sources, and can take actions in connected systems. When a customer is not signed in, they use only public articles. They fit teams that already run support in Zendesk. See the Zendesk AI comparison.

How to choose between them

  • Start from where your team works. If it lives in a help desk, the AI built into that help desk saves a hand-off step. If it answers by email, a standalone chatbot is less to adopt.
  • Decide whether the bot must act. Order lookups and bookings need a tool with actions or store integrations. Answers from policies and guides do not.
  • Test refusals, not only answers. Ask questions your docs do not cover and count the made-up answers. A demo on the vendor's own content tells you little.
  • Check how content stays current. Ask how often websites are re-read on the plan you would buy.

Our chatbot selection checklist lists the questions to ask every vendor, and how to turn your help center into an AI chatbot walks through the setup with any tool.

Frequently asked questions

How were these tools chosen?

Each one answers from content the business provides, can read a public website or help center, can hand a visitor to a person, and documents all three on its own public pages. We left out tools whose pages we could not check.

Is this list ranked?

No. The tools are built for different teams, so the order is alphabetical, with Paperlink AI marked as ours. The right choice depends on where your support team already works.

Why are prices not listed?

Prices change often and we cannot keep other vendors' prices current. Each vendor publishes its own pricing page; check it on the day you decide. Paperlink AI prices are on our pricing page.

Which of these tools are part of a help desk?

Intercom Fin works inside Intercom and with other help desks, Zendesk AI agents are part of Zendesk, and Tidio Lyro is part of Tidio. Chatbase, SiteGPT and Paperlink AI are standalone chatbots that you add to your site.

How do I test a documentation chatbot before I buy?

Load the same help pages into each tool you shortlist, then ask 20 real questions: 15 your docs answer and 5 they do not. Count the correct answers, the honest refusals and the made-up answers.
